The Birth of a Movement: A History of Samata Sainik Dal

Long before Samata Sainik Dal existed as a formal organisation, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was already building the institutional scaffolding of a movement. In January 1920 he launched Mooknayak ("Leader of the Voiceless"), a Marathi weekly that gave a public voice to India's Depressed Classes. Four years later, in July 1924, fresh from earning a D.Sc. in Economics at the London School of Economics, he founded the Bahishkrit Hitakarini Sabha — the Depressed Classes Welfare Association — his first sustained organisational effort against untouchability.
